Q840: Problem. I am trying to get service-connected for PTSD, but I have nothing in my service records about trauma I experienced in service and I do not get PTSD treatment at the VA. I don’t get treatment from any outside provider. Am I wasting my time if I put in for PTSD?
A1: I finally navigated a 100% service-connected PTSD March 2010 with a VA doctor recommendation coupled to the local Vet Center plus my own PC online research of actual events with names of the 44 fallen October 26, 1966, flare explosion on my attack aircraft carrier warship 'Nam USS Oriskany. The local Vet Center locked it all in place with a series of interviews. (KB) 3/10/22
A2: To get service connected for a disability you have to meet the rule of three: in-service occurrence or event, current diagnosis, and a link between the current diagnosis and the in-service occurrence. VA only rates chronic disabilities. If you think you have PTSD, then talk with your doctor to seek treatment. (DS) 3/10/22
A3: Am I wasting my time if I put in for PTSD?
Once again, the simple answer is YES.
There are three requirements that make up a claim for PTSD:
1. A current diagnosis
2. An in-service stressor
3. A link between the current diagnosis and stressor
If you are not seeking or receiving treatment it would seem that you are missing step 1 listed above. (RJ) 3/10/22
A4: I would say not. I had no service records, no treatment, no doctor, nothing. I found a bunch of guys from my unit and buddy letters. Good enough for the VA. I'm 70% PTSD now. (RB) 3/10/22
