Q447: I was in the military in 1960 thru 1962. I just read where Asbestos was bad in the barracks during those years. I have bad breathing problems today, is this possibly related to the military?
If you have a question about benefits, compensation, pension or VA related issues please submit here.
Use Form Below To Respond
A1: Yes, I served in the seabees during the 1960's and have very bad breathing problems today. (FS) 6/25/20
A2: Maybe, maybe not. You don't say what branch of Service you ere in. Some skills/ratings involve exposure to hazardous chemicals and smoke. Did you smoke? Do you live in a place with bad air, like Los Angeles? Talk to your doctor about what specific breathing issues you have and have get checked for asbestosis or mesothelioma, the two main conditions caused by asbestos exposure. (DJ) 6/25/20
A3: You could have Asbestosis. Do you have a Doctor that has diagnosed you with that problem and is willing to so state? I suggest you contact an Accredited VSO with the VFW, DAV, Am Vets, American Legion or other Service Organizations. Yes some barracks, steam lines, brake shoes (if you were a Whl Veh Mech) or on a ship (the ships logs tell when they were dry docked and the Asbestos removed). There are other instances where you could have been exposed. If you ever were exposed and inhaled it is still in your lungs. File a claim. (GH) 6/25/20
A4: In 1960, I was in the Army at Ft. Leonard Wood,Mo. They burned coal in the barracks and we were issued cigarettes, as part of our rations when in the field. Also, I was in Ft. Polk,La,61 and 62. When we moved in N. FT. Polk,La, we had to run the wild hogs out of the barracks I know these building were full of asbestos. (MH) 6/25/20
