Q422: I was discharged from the Navy on 7/52. I have had a breathing problem since which over the years got worse. In my later years I discovered that I had asbestos on one lung. I tried getting help years ago but I was told that there is no way that I can prove that my problem came from my Navy days. I also have a hearing problem that I thought I got that from firing the anti aircraft guns, but no proof. About ten years ago they gave me 10% disability then about 4 years ago I got an increase to 70%. My breathing problem are now very bad. Do I get back pay for my problems?

A1: You get paid from the date compensation is filed. However, if you have a claim on appeal you will be paid from date of appeal if you are awarded compensation for the issue. I recommend you contact an Accredited VSO from the American Legion, DAV, VFW or another Service organization. They will explain what your options are. (GH) 5/23/20
