Q436: I have a claim for SMC due to aggravation of a NSC condition (autoimmune disease. RA). I’m 100% SC,T&P due to PTSD, and 60% RA (autoimmune disease). I was diagnosed PTSD in 1996 and diagnosed with RA in 1987. After the diagnosis of PTSD, due to excessive stress and anxiety, my NSC disease is been aggravated at the point that I'm wheelchair bounded. Replacements of both knees and right shoulder with chronic residual pain in all my body joints. VA failed in the process of rating my NSC at the present to determine the aggravation of the disease. They rated PTSD,100%,T&P, in 1996, but failed to rate my NSC, to determined worsening of my disease to established a baseline date. And failed again during all this year's to the present. Please give me some orientation about this claim and the possibility that VA will award my claim.

A1: SMC is Special Monthly Compensation. On the surface it appears that you could receive SMC. Contact an Accredited VSO with the American Legion, VFW, DAV or other Service Organizations. Also you could file for Aid&Attendance based on what you have indicated. However, an Accredited VSO would advise you and give you the necessary form to be completed by your Primary Care Doctor at the VA or your private MD. Also I would advise you to talk to the Social Worker that is assigned to your team. You should be able to obtain home care. Also your Primary Care Doctor at the VA could help you obtain medical assistance during the week at your residence. However, an Accredited VSO should be able to help you obtain everything that is available and explain how to obtain. (GH) 6/4/20
